Divas nos Queremos
Sofia Moreno, KJ Freeman, and Laura Brown
Sunday, July 26, 7pm EST / 6pm CDT / 4pm PST on Zoom

Co-hosted by HOUSING NY

Artist Sofia Moreno joins KJ Freeman of HOUSING NY and Laura Brown of Participant Inc to talk about the reach of the community effort, Divas nos Queremos.

Under the collaborative umbrella of s+s project, Sofia Moreno has organized projects with artists and peers for over a decade. In 2020, s+s project in collaboration with babyratta (Mexico City) created Divas nos Queremos, a series of micro grants that help to counteract the financial disparity faced by trans artists and activists living in Mexico, and to soften the impact of Covid-19, with plans to extend support to Central America and South America.

Moreno will present a series of performances at Participant Inc in 2021, related to her work Mi Jardín Botánico: El Falso Final Feliz / My Botanical Garden: The False Happy Ending. “Through mixed-media scenes of agency, fetishization, resistance, and fantasy, Moreno calls attention to the violence against trans femme bodies across the Americas. She weaves together Mesoamerican mythology and TransNoir science fiction to produce a speculative identity politics born of the ancient and the not-yet-here. Her stylized body of work constantly evolves by recycling material from previous performances and installations as a departure point for new work. Recirculating raw matter in a ritual setting, she creates a botched garden of earthly delights, where composition and color are erotic languages, and where even the artist's own body is a sculpture in installation and durational performance.”—Noa/h Fields

Access: This event includes live ASL interpretation
